Feeling Nervous? That’s Completely Normal.

Wondering what your upcoming OH&S-approved first aid course will be like? Nervous about passing? Curious about who you’ll be in class with?
You’re not alone — and you’re in the right place.
As your guide, I bring years of experience as a certified instructor, instructor trainer, and master instructor trainer with the Red Cross, Lifesaving Society, and St. Mark James Training. I’ve taught countless first aid classes, and I’m here to help you understand what to expect, so you can walk into your course confident and ready.
What to Expect on Day One
Most participants arrive early (and nervous!) — which is exactly what we recommend. Some instructors have a strict “no late entry” policy, so aim to show up on time or even a bit early to avoid missing anything.
Class typically begins with a warm welcome, a breakdown of the day’s schedule, and a quick icebreaker to help ease those first-day jitters. You’ll be paired up and grouped throughout the course, so building comfort with your fellow students is part of the learning process.
Even if you’re more introverted, this environment is designed to support you. First aid training is about learning to step up and act in emergencies — and we’ll help you build that confidence from the start.
What Happens During the Course?
Your first aid and CPR course will include a mix of:
- Brief lectures
- Demonstrations
- Hands-on skills practice
- Group activities and role-play scenarios
Instructors at Lethbridge First Aid are highly trained and encouraged to keep things interactive, practical, and fun. You won’t just sit through slides — you’ll practice real-life skills in real-life situations. This is the most effective way to learn, and it’s how we ensure you walk away confident in your abilities.
There will be a short test at the end, and your skills will be assessed. But don’t worry — we’re here to support you the whole way.
Is It Hard to Pass?
Not at all.
These courses are made for everyday people, not medical professionals. As long as you:
- Show up on time
- Pay attention
- Participate in class
- Ask questions when you’re unsure
…you’ll be just fine. The instructors are patient, friendly, and genuinely want to help you succeed.
Who Will Be in the Class With You?
Every first aid class has its mix of personalities. You’ll likely meet:
- The Quiet One – Nervous and reserved but usually opens up over time.
- The Prisoner – Required to attend for work and not super thrilled about it.
- The Keener – Front row, hands up, always engaged.
- The Average Learner – Happy to be there and excited to learn.
- The Sleeper – Stayed up too late and might miss some of the action. (Don’t be this one!)
No matter which type you are, the class is designed to support all learning styles and help everyone feel successful.
